As a member of an interdisciplinary NP primary/palliative care team, the Medical Assistant role will provide compassionate patient care as a full member of an interdisciplinary team. Participation in management of daily work flows such as phone and secure message triage, pre-visit work, filling out forms to fullest extent, communicating simple test results as directed by the Inter-Disciplinary Team (IDT).

Responsibilities

    Take telephone messages and provide feedback to questions, answers to patient/physician/pharmacy calls. Process messages from patients and office staff to physicians and nurse practitioners.
  • Greet patients, escort patients to exam rooms
  • Use various computer applications such as electronic medical record systems, Microsoft Office applications, fax, scanner and copier
  • Give instructions to patients as instructed and directed by physician or nurse practitioner
  • Update and file patient medical records
  • Verify and enter insurance information and complete insurance forms
  • Schedule appointments
  • Arrange for hospital admissions and laboratory services
  • Handle correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping
  • Interview patients and take patient medical histories
  • Measure vital signs such as weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature & document all information in patients' chart
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients
  • Prepare patients for examination
  • Assist the physician during exams
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Perform basic laboratory tests
  • Instruct patients about medication and special diets
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician
  • Authorize prescription refills as directed by physician
  • Draw blood
  • Take electrocardiograms
  • Remove sutures and changing dressings
  • Assist physician and nurse practitioner in exam rooms, in-home and skilled buildings as needed
  • Ensure all related reports, labs and information is filed is available in patients' medical records prior to their appointment
  • Stock exam rooms and mobile medical bag with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, prepare sterilization as required
  • Create, review and update daily schedule for providers. Input all data including demographics, accurate date of birth, name, social and other required information.
  • Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid change, etc.)

Qualifications/Skillsets

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant Program
  • Must be a licensed Certified Medical Assistant in this state
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient care information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the meaning and usage of common medical abbreviations, symbols and terms relative to the administration of medications.
  • Ability to accurately measure, record and report the vital signs of a patient.
  • Healthcare field and medical specialty, Medical terminology, Grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and experience working on Electronic Medical Software such as Point Click Care, WebMD, HomeCare HomeBase, etc.
  • Experience with Insurance authorizations, billing policies and procedures
  • Exceptional customer service and phone etiquette
  • Ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy and administer injections
